The anthropologist & blogger Dr. Gabriele Marranci just published his second book The Anthropology of Islam. In his weblog he provides a very readable, interesting part of the introduction on how ‘Islam’ may be understood within the field of anthropology written in the form of a question-answer dialogue. The conclusion that is drawn at the end of the text is:

the most important aspect is neither what the Islamic texts read, nor what Muslims believe, nor how they act, but rather whether or not they believe themselves to be Muslims, and here emotions play a very important role

With a prayer for all those souls murdered in the name of my religion, I confess I am not so concerned about Europe. And I don’t care about cartoons in Denmark. Newspapers there have every right to publish whatever they like. I couldn’t care less about Geert Wilders, the Dutch politician whose film Fitna will surely provoke more fear-mongering racism. It’s just red meat dished out to right wing Europeans.But I also have little interest in the views of the left wing reader who may be waiting for my inner Victimized Muslim to blame all our ills on the right wing, or the United States, or Israel. No, I have a much closer, more intimate concern.

I am not so concerned about these others, because the main target of Muslim violence is fellow Muslims in the Muslim world.

Hakim Abdullah schreibt in seinem Weblog über McGinty’s Buch und hat mich mit seinem Artikel inspiriert mal einen Blick ins Buch bei Amazon zu werfen. McGinty studierte “european ethnology” in Schweden, ist also mehr oder weniger eine Fach-Kollegin. Sie interviewte zum Islam konvertierteFrauen in den USA und Schweden. Ihr Interesse fokusiert sich auf die Identität dieser Frauen, sie wollte wissen, was sie am Islam anspricht. Ein spannendes Thema, das auch mich fasziniert. McGinty beschreibt übrigens anschaulich, warum sie sich für dieses Thema zu interessieren begann, obwohl Religion in ihrem eigenen Leben keine große Rolle spielt: Sie war mit 14 für ein Jahr mit ihrer Familie im Irak, ging dort zur Schule und setzte sich durch eine praktizierende muslimische Freundin aus Pakistan mit dem Thema Religion/Islam auseinander. Von den paar Seiten die bei Amazon zur Verfügung stehen, kann man blos sagen, dass es ein sehr interessantes und gut recherchiertes Buch zu sein scheint. Vor allem die Frage der Identitätstransformation ist wohl zentral…für eine genauere Besprechung möchte ich Hakim’s Rezension empfehlen. Ich hab mir das Buch schon mal bestellt…später vielleicht mehr dazu.

Ich gebs ja zu, ich hab nicht besonders viel Ahnung von Second Life…ABER: ich hab ein paar umso interessantere Links zum Thema Islam & Second Life: Lorenz von antropologi.info schrieb heute über einen Anthropologen, der in Second Life Untersuchungen zum Thema “Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human” betreibt. Sehr interessant…noch viel interessanter aber scheint mir der Hinweis auf Yunus Yakoub Islam (sein Blog: istikhara) der - wie Lorenz erwähnt- seine Diss über Religion in Second Life schreibt…er bewegt sich dabei im Umkreis von Autoethnographie (siehe Links zu Carolyn Ellis ), Islamforschung, Onlineforschung…und ist derzeit dabei seinen Zugang zu definieren…auf jeden Fall spannend, was er so tut und definitv wert seine Arbeit weiter zu verfolgen!

go, read it. Its a conversion-story…but different to many others i have heard before. For me it was really interesting to read short stories written by an american muslim…its so different to what one usually gets to read. Really refreshing!

The last few days I had a lot of discussions with friends and family about the cartoons in Jyllands Posten. I read lots of newspaper-articles online as well as Blogposts.

The sources which I found most interesting were Daniel Variscos blog post: Much Ado about Something Rotten in Denmark as well as a blog post by Mona Eltahawy (also quoted by Varisco) called A Mountain Out of a Molehill Over Danish Cartoons.

If you read german, there’s a good overview at perlentaucher on the reactions of european media and an entry at wikipedia.

I went for a coffee with a friend after classes yesterday. She converted to Islam some time ago and told me about muslim hiphop in german - something I never even knew existed. The band she was so fascinted from is called “ammar114″ and all of their songs are freely downloadable. I just tried, but their website seems to be down currently. Anyway, I found a link to a songtext (Schwester) and some of their songs are free for download here.
